GLBT/HIV Counseling

Do GLBT people and heterosexual people have different needs in therapy? Yes and no. While the majority of problems brought to therapy are universal human struggles, GLBT clients can have specific needs around issues such as attachment (the desire for and enjoyment of the presence of another) and self-esteem affected by negative experiences around disclosing sexual orientation. Likewise, while empathy and compassion from the therapist are always needed to establish rapport and trust, these qualities are critical for GLBT clients to feel accepted and safe.

Similary, people living with HIV can have unique needs around healing stigma and shame. HIV can be an isolating condition, and those living with the virus often have limited opportunities to talk about that experience. As with GLBT concerns, empathy and compassion are critical.

I became a counselor in part to provide services specifically to people who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender, and to people living with HIV. I completed an internship for my graduate degree at an agency that provides therapy and psychiatric services to people living with HIV and the GLBT community, where I conducted individual, couple, and group therapy. I have worked as an outpatient substance treatment counselor in a program for people with HIV and substance use problems, as a contract therapist for Waterloo Counseling Center, and as a risk reduction counselor for AIDS Services of Austin. I believe an important part of my life purpose is to provide a safe, understanding environment for these communities of people to explore issues particular to HIV and personal identity.

Sexual/romantic orientation and identity are highly personal issues. My philosophy is that each person has the right to express sexuality and romantic attachment in the way that is appropriate for that individual. I offer nonjudgmental, compassionate help to figure out your identity and take steps to live authentically in this area of your life.
